The Greater Alpine Fire Safe Council

History

The Greater Alpine Fire Safe Council ("GAFSC") was formed in 2005 to implement the Alpine Community Wildfire Protection Plan ("CWPP") and provide education about living more safely in wildfire prone areas.

Progress

Fuelbreaks
In its five years of operation, GAFSC has begun to create fuelbreaks that when completed will encircle the town of Alpine.  Work is done in the order prioritized for us by our agency partners and as funding permits.  To date, with help from the US Forest Service, the Viejas and Ewiiaapaayp Bands of Kumeyaay Indians, and the Ranches of Palo Verde FSC, the parts of the Viejas, Sweetwater, and Southern Fuelbreaks on private land have been completed.   We have recently also completed fuelbreaks in Alpine Heights, Crown Hills and Victoria Loop. Addtionally we've begun to remow the Southern Fuelbreak and plan for a large fuelbreak in Horsethief Canyon.

Chipping
Greater Alpine Fire Safe Council's chipping programs have assisted homeowners in seven targeted high-risk neighborhoods, creating 410 acres of defensible space.  Community chipping days allow participation by residents throughout the Alpine area.

Education
Greater Alpine Fire Safe Council's annual "Home Alone" workshops at Joan MacQueen and Los Coches Middle Schools help Alpine's kids be prepared for wildfire.
